Character Name: Alphonse Elric
Character Series: FullMetal Alchemist
Age: 15
Background: Alphonse was the youngest child of Trisha Elric and Hohenheim of the Light. As a boy, Alphonse always followed in the footsteps of the older brother that he admired very much. Alphonse's father left his family when Alphonse was too young to remember, and Alphonse was always full of questions of his father that his brother did not take kindly to hearing.
When Alphonse was just eight years old when his mother passed away. Alphonse was struck by the loss, but not nearly as much as his older brother was. Alphonse knew that even though they lost their mother, he could still look up to Edward for care, comfort, and love. On the day of their mother's funeral, Edward had suggested that the two of them use alchemy to bring their mother back to life. Even though Al felt apprehensive, he still decided to back his brother up and commit to learning human transmutation.
The brothers spent several months teaching themselves alchemy and ignoring their school studies before they found themselves an opportunity to become the apprentices of a magnificient alchemist named Izumi Curtis. During their training, the brothers fought many hardships, including spending an entire 30 days "alone" on a dessert island with their teacher's companion tormenting them daily until they were exhausted enough to realize the riddle "All is One, One is All" that she had left them with.
After studying under Izumi, the brothers spend a few more months in preparation for human transmutation, using the books their father left behind as resources. At times, that uneasy feeling grew inside of Al once more, but every time he started to allude to it, Edward would quench his fears and reassure him.
On the evening that the brothers decided to bring their mother back, it was pounding rain, which only made Al feel a little more nervous. Much to Al's dismay, when the transmutation began, his fears were proven true. Al was in a panic as he felt his body being tugged at every end by something he couldn't even see. With all his efforts, Al tried calling and reaching for his brother, but neither of them succeeded in saving the child's body.
When Al awoke, at first he hoped that what happened would be a nightmare, but the first sight he saw demolished that hope. Al was confused by the sounds he made when his joints moved, and that's when he looked to his hand and realized that he was somehow inside of a suit of armor. Even through his puzzlement, Al still went to his brother's side in worry of his brother's bloody and mangled body.
Even though Al tried to hush him, Edward explained that they were wrong in trying to resurrect their mother. Edward had even told him without him asking that what they had transmuted had not been their mother, but a horribly creature. Al could see by the mass of bloody flesh and bone in the center of the barn that his brother was not exadurating.
Through the next few days, Al spent his time trying to help his brother recover both physically and emotionally from the stress they both suffered. Al couldn't understand why his brother was so upset, since it hadn't dawned on him the troubles of having a body such as his would bring. It was when the Amestrian Colonel Roy Mustang came to their door proposing that Edward become a State Alchemist that gave Edward the motivation to gain a little of the spirit he lost back.
When Edward decided to undergo automail surgery, Al worried over his brother and tried to stay by his side. Al was ushered out of the room and sat outside, listening to the agonizing groans of his brother in the next room. It was at that time when Al was alone that he realized the potential faults of the body he was in. Even though he knew that Edward was feeling pain in the next room, a part of him longed to be able to feel even that. It didn't bother him so much when he was distracted, but the feeling of not being able to feel started to haunt him.
It only took Edward one year to recover from his automail surgery, and that was when the brothers started their journey to Central to become State Alchemists and gain access to classified information in order to restore what they had lost. Unfortunately for Al, after taking the written exam and passing, Colonel Mustang took the brothers aside and explained that there would be a physical examination which would jeopardise the brothers' secret. Alphonse was slightly devastated when he found out that he could no longer become a State Alchemist with his brother.
Al was proud when Edward finally became a State Alchemist, and it was around that time that Alphonse had brought up the idea of the mystical Philosopher's Stone that they had read about in their father's notes. Though Edward was reluctant at first, he was soon convinced that the Philosopher's Stone would be the catalyst to restore their bodies.
On their search for the sacred stone, the brothers came across many hardships and adversaries. The most notable of their antagonists were the seven homunculus bearing the names of Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Pride, and of course, Sloth. The brothers were horrified to learn that these creatures were the product of failed human transmutation, which meant the creature named Sloth was none other than their attempt to bring back their beloved mother. That wasn't the only painful piece of information the brother's came across, though... The brother's almost reconsidered their actions when they found out that the Philosopher's Stone was made with human lives.
At one point in time, soon after their discovery of the contents of the Philosopher's Stone, Al started to question his existence. It was the fault of a former criminal named Barry the Chopper, who had acquired the same physical state that Al had. Barry's words seemed to sink into him when he told him that memories were nothing but data, so he could really be nothing but a made up person to be thrown away when Edward was done with him. Al normally wouldn't have believed such utter nonsense, but he remembered a day when Edward started telling him a secret that he was too scared to tell him to that point. Al immediately coorelated the two, thinking that the secret Ed was keeping from him was that he was no more human than a piece of automail.
Luckily for the brothers, after Al blew up at Edward and ran away, Edward was quick to find him. When the two were reunited, Edward explained to Al that the thing he had been scared to say was more of a question as to whether or not Al hated him for the way things turned out. Al regained confidence through Edward's reassurance, as well as the words of their enemy, Scar.
The story of the two brother's does not get easier when they finally come into possession of the Philosopher's Stone. It happened in Lior, one of the first towns the brother's thought they'd actually found the Philosopher's Stone in the first place. It was when the military suspected Scar of turning the whole city into the Philosopher's Stone when Edward was dispatched to gather information. Al was worried to let his brother go, but he had no choice until Major Armstrong, one of the Elrics' allies, had returned Edward's pocket watch (which had been confiscated prior to Edward's journey to Lior). It was then that Alphonse and the Major realized that there was something hidden inside the pocket watch... it was none other than an incomplete Philosopher's Stone that the military had been known to use in war! Suspicion rose in the two of them, especially when Alphonse confided in the Major that the Fuhrer was none other than a Homunculus (which he found out only moments before when the Fuhrer had killed a dear friend inside of the poor child's armor body.) The Major suggested that Al should go find his brother immediately, and that's what Al left to do.
When Al made it to Lior, he was confronted by an enemy named Kimblee. Al battled his enemy, but in the end, he came out the loser. Kimblee decided to turn Alphonse's body into a slowly decomposing bomb that would burst as soon as his body had fully changed. When Al's body was pretty far along in the reconstruction, Scar, another former? enemy used an alchemic reaction on him. Scar explained that he didn't know how to do alchemy, but he did know how to do one thing that would save Al. Al was horrified and tried to stop him, but Scar laid down his life and the lives of all the soldiers sent to Lior to create the finished Philosopher's Stone as Al's new body.
At first, Al hadn't realized what happened, but he felt lighter and stronger. Al was reunited with his brother a short time later, and the two of them decided to run from the military, since they knew that the military would want an explaination, or perhaps more from the two of them. During the time they were running away, Al and Edward realized that Al's body was no longer normal. First of all, whenever Edward touched Al, his body would light up in red energy in a similar pattern to the one they knew to be the tattoos on Scar's arm. Secondly, the inside of Al's chestplate was no longer empty, but encrusted with a shining red stone. At last, they had come into possession of the Philosopher's Stone.
(This is when I change things up a bit :D)
Edward explained to Al that they absolutely could not risk touching eachother to cause an alchemic reaction, since they didn't know how it would effect Al's body. Al was upset by this notion, but Edward was firm in his opinion and led the way with a reasonable distance. Through their walk, Al couldn't help but think that if they just used the stone, he could have his body back and Edward could have his arm and leg back.
When Edward grew weary and stopped to rest, that's when Al decided it was time. Al told Edward that he knew how to use the stone, since it was part of him now. Al was bluffing, but he had always been much better at that than Edward was. Edward took a long time to be convinced, but Al finally did it. It was during the alchemical reaction that restored Al's body that the two brother's were thrown into the strange land of Memento Eden.
Personality: Al is kind and gentle, but he is by no means a weak individual. Al is almost always polite, even to people that he doesn't really care for. Al is usually calm and collected in the time of crisis, unless those around him are unable to hande the stress of the situation, then he can become the main offensive force. There are some things that press Al's buttons, like seeing Edward or an innocent person/animal suffer, and in times like that, Al can become just as much (if not more so) out of control as Edward.
Like Edward, Al is classified as a genius, and he has an impeccible memory of theories that he reads. In practice, Al can be less tallented than his brother, but in theory, Al is the superior one. Also, Al is good with learning martial arts skills, and he can do so with more ease than Edward. Al usually becomes tallented in anything he puts his mind to.
Likes: Kittens, Edward, reading, playing in the snow, studying/researching, remembering, milk, kindness, friends, being touchedby Edward, clouds, hot cocoa
Dislikes: Seeing Edward hurt, seeing Edward struggle, Edward's automail, any kind of abuse to the innocent, kittens being stuck outside in the rain, not remembering, pain, sadness
Item Lost: An orange kitten plushie named Cookie that Ed had bought him to make up after one of their fights.
